There’s sort of a limit to how many animated kid’s films you can watch after a certain age, thus I decided to take two-hour pause and watch a pulpy, revenge, crude, ultra-violent, crazy film to later on resume with animated film reviews. Once again, another film that showcases the worst case scenario that an accident or something you said can lead to. After being locked up fifteen years without even knowing why, our titular character undergoes a physical and psychological transformation that will transform him into a animalistic, blood-thirsty, revenge determined savage, but he falls in love. First I must say, yes this is a revenge film, but it’s more than that, it’s a a character driven, performance driven, psychological film that will leave you in a state of awe by the end. The performances in this film are otherworldly in a good way, Min-Sik Choi is perfect as Daesu, but even better, Yoo Ji-Tae who depicts pure creepiness in a totally off-kilter performance in which he appears to be possessed by his character. Then, the spectacular action, of course there’s the amazing hallway scene, but the inside-the-mouth mutilation scenes were personally my favorite. In conclusion, Oldboy is a crazy film with incest, octopuses, sex, drugs, and lots of blood; however, it uses these elements in such a way that they make perfect sense for the film allowing me to rank it at an 82 out of 10.
